Ashraful falls after solid half-century
Lunch Bangladesh 200 for 5 (Shakib 40*, Mushfiqur 3*, Vitori 3-40) trail Zimbabwe 370 by 170 runs

Bangladesh and Zimbabwe shared the spoils in the first session of the third day, with Bangladesh scoring quickly but losing two important wickets on a pitch that is expected to serve the batsmen well today. With the temperatures notably warmer than they have been the over the week and sunshine flattening the deck, the batsmen can expect a pleasant afternoon at the crease.

Zimbabwe's bowlers gave another respectable account of themselves, with the opening pair's attacking intent evident. Their one fault was persisting with too short a length, which, though initially caused some uneasiness for the Bangladesh batsmen, they soon learnt to negotiate.

Brian Vitori and Kyle Jarvis began the morning with the same energy that they showed when they started on day two, although Vitori's movement was not quite as impressive. Jarvis struggled with his line initially, but he managed it to reign it in from straying too much on the leg side. He presented the batsman with the biggest threat. In his second over, he had a confident appeal for lbw against Ashraful, off a delivery that straightened as it stuck him on the back pad, but it was turned down.

Luck wasn't on Jarvis' side through the morning as three overs later a second catch off his bowling was put down in the innings. Ashraful, who had been playing tentatively early on and had just started to find his rhythm and was driving solidly, mistimed a pull shot over gully's head. Vusi Sibanda had to look over his shoulder as he backpedalled to take the catch and although he got to the ball, he couldn't hold on. Ashraful capitalised on his fortune and reached his half-century with a confident cut through point.

While Ashraful appeared to have settled in, Mahmudullah was negotiating a variety of fuller and back of a length deliveries, and being tangled up in ones that drew him too far forward or went down leg. He succumbed to none of them, but then tamely pulled a short ball - that he should have sent over midwicket - to square leg.

Brendan Taylor said at the end of play yesterday that Elton Chigumbura and Chris Mpofu would be used in a holding role. The pair presented no real attacking intent, also allowing Bangladesh to score briskly. Ashraful and Shakib ran well between the wickets, with Ashraful anchoring proceedings as Shakib familiarised himself with the conditions. Shakib was presented with a lot of full deliveries that came in close to off stump early on and pushed away from his body, once getting an inside edge.

After the initial period of hesitance, Shakib played himself in, leaving the length balls well and dealing with a spray of needless Mpofu short balls. He put on 54 with Ashraful for the fifth wicket and both looked set to bat all day, when Ashraful threw away a determined, impressive knock. He wafted at a short Chigumbura delivery trying to run it past the slips, but got an edge that Tatenda Taibu accepted with glee. The runs dried up with his dismissal, with Ray Price bowling from one end and Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim biding time before lunch.
