As its name suggests is indigenous to India. Â
The fruit of this plant is used as medicine. It's a Wonder Herb.
Shusrut, the great authority on Ayurveda considers it best of all fruits, useful for good health and in treating various illnesses. It is the main component in Chyvanaprasha. Rishi Chyawan rejuvenated himself in his late 70' s regained virility.

It has CALCIUM, PHOSPHORUS, IRON, CAROTENE, THIAMINE, RIBOFLAVIN, NIACIN and VITAMIN C.
It has very high Vitamin C content. And is cooling by nature. It is an anti oxidant. Even when dried and used in powder form has high Vitamin C content.
Its useful properties:
1. Excellent rejuvenating agent. Used as tonic. Anti ageing. Promoting strength of the body.
2. Useful for heart diseases. High blood pressure, palpitations. It strengthens the muscles of heart hence prevents heart attacks and regulates the heartbeats therefore controls palpitations. It is mild in diuretic in action. Useful to lower high blood pressure.
3. It is cooling in nature useful in memory loss, insomnia (sleeplessness), graying of hair and baldness.
4. Useful in diabetes. 1/4 tsp of amla powder + 1/4 tsp of haldee (turmeric) powder taken twice with food Or 1 tsp of amla juice+1/4 tsp of turmeric juice with food twice a day. Fresh amla and turmeric mixed in chutney (paste like) form can also be used. It stimulates the pancreas to secrete insulin.
5. Useful in treatment of liver diseases, jaundice.
6. Useful in gastric Ulcer, Deuodenal Ulcer.
7. Its mild laxative is useful in piles.
8. Its cooling effect helps burning urine and in menstrual disorders.
9. Good for eye diseases. Refraction, eyeball weakness, reduces intra occular tension in glucoma, changes in retina, in conjunctivitis. Fresh amla washed and pierced with sterile needle and compressed to take out few drops of juice put directly in the eye helps prevention of cataract formation.
10. Useful in Bronchitis, Asthma. Tuberculosis.
11. Useful in skin diseases, eczema and used for increase sweating of palms and soles.
12. Useful in arthritis.
13. Useful in increasing sperm count. Amla powder + crystal sugar (misri) mixed in equal quantity. Should be taken 1 tsp at bedtime with a glass of water.

Amla powder boiled in water and cooled is used for gargle for good and strong teeth.

Administration
To prepare juice: Fruit is washed, made into a paste then juice is extracted by squeezing the paste through a piece of thin clean cloth Juice can be taken with honey, sugar or crystal sugar (misri). For diabetics instead of honey or sugar use haldee (turmeric) juice
To prepare powder: Dry the fruit in a shade. The seeds and foreign particles are removed. And is pounded. The Powder is normally taken with equal quantity of crystal sugar (misri). 6 Gms can be taken twice daily with water For diabetics, instead of sugar turmeric powder should be used.
Precautions:
1. Avoid immediate use of milk before or after Amla, unless had in the form of Chyavanprash.
2. Avoid its use on Fridays and Sundays as suggested by senior Ayurved physician.
